PTO Parent Education Program - IB, AP, or Dual Enrollment: How to Choose? - Shared screen with speaker view
Dagmar Ebaugh (she/her)
26:06
Isn't one of the main differences that AP scores can give you college credit vs. IB diploma,, which doesn't necessarily exempt you from college requirements?
Jamison Johnson
26:26
what is an extended essay
Julia Byrne
27:07
Parent here, of Uni freshman that did IB. Many universities will give credit for IB courses
John Denine
27:10
The extended essay is a 4,000 word piece of independent research that students complete over their two years in the IB Diploma Programme.
William (Bill) Robinson
27:23
Which program allows students to access the Fernbank Science Center courses?
Lily Hollatz
27:26
The extended essay is an research paper IB students write about any topic of their choice. It is about 4000 words, but we are given supervisors and access to many resources to write with.
William (Bill) Robinson
27:32
Which program is better if the student wants to be an engineer and get into Ga Tech?
Veena Black
27:42
If my child is a freshman, can he still apply for IB? When does IB officially start besides three Spanish and two math requirements before Junior year?
maria’s iPhone
27:49
when is the EE due?
David Leonard
28:34
@Veena my son is a freshman and we just applied to the IB program last week (at the very last minute). I wish this meeting had taken place prior to that deadline…it would only make sense.
Julia Byrne
28:35
EE was due… after holiday break, if I remember correctly. Not right after, in Feb/March
Lily Hollatz
28:40
It was due this January for us, but we began working on it last spring
Lily Hollatz
29:06
IB classes start Junior year
Julia Byrne
29:09
When Zach was doing it, he worked on the first draft of his EE the summer before senior year
Veena Black
29:46
@David Thank you. My daughter did AP so I thought he had time until his junior year to apply.
Carla Brown
30:15
@William Fernbank Science Center's course begin at 3pm. However, classes end at DHHS at 3:10. It is best if a student is not in IB, because they would have to leave school early. However, if an arrangement is made with the student's 4th period teacher to leave early on those days, any student can take a science class at Fernbank.
Dagmar Ebaugh (she/her)
30:29
Can IB program students not take an AP course as part of their curriculum? I've taught AP courses in both public and private schools but not in an IB school
Julia Byrne
30:45
IB students can take *some* ap classes:
Julia Byrne
30:57
Z took AP AB calc, AP stats
Julia Byrne
31:02
Junior/senior year
Anne Bracewell
31:12
This year EE was extended because of covid--we lost EE supervisors. It was due right after break. Usually we ask for it
Dagmar Ebaugh (she/her)
32:03
Will taking the IB route exclude the opportunity of continuing in Orchestra, or Art?
William (Bill) Robinson
32:09
I’ve heard that it’s more difficult to get 16 college credits through the AP program, whereas the IB program is simpler to get credits because the courses are scheduled as a cohort.
Dagmar Ebaugh (she/her)
32:12
due to the 'planned' nature of the course curriculum
Julia Byrne
32:54
To Dagmar: I can’t speak to specific classes, but it is true that options for electives outside of IB is more limited
Lily Hollatz
33:03
Also we can take AP exams without officially taking the class. However, the IB curriculum is different from what's on the AP test usually. it's a lot of extra studying from what I've heard from my peers.
Dagmar Ebaugh (she/her)
33:03
Thanks @Julia Byrne
Julia Byrne
33:05
Due to planned nature, as you say
Jumar Kennedy
33:45
Does dual enrollment pay for books?
Jamison Johnson
33:59
@lily hollatz for the extended essay explaining
Cindy Eldridge
34:03
Does the school offer any after-school orchestra/art classes or programs?
Jumar Kennedy
35:36
Did GSU wave the ACT/SAT test requirement?
Martha Donovan
36:26
@Jumar, if you mean for freshman year admission, for this year, yes. It won't likely be permanent.
Lily Hollatz
36:50
I don't believe GSU required test scores when I applied this year.
Jumar Kennedy
36:57
for dual enrollment.
Carla Brown
39:46
@Jumar Dual enrollment does pay for books
William (Bill) Robinson
40:24
Are the sufficient AP classes available such that students can take 5 – 7 AP classes?
R. A. Henery
40:53
Yes at Druid Hills HS @William Robinson
Lily Hollatz
40:56
There's a lot of AP courses offered at Druid Hills!
Jamison Johnson
41:43
is there a limit of the AP classes we can take
Carla Brown
41:46
There are roughly 13 AP courses
Carla Brown
41:58
at DHHS, that is
Carla Brown
42:31
There is no limit. You can take as many can fit in your schedule.
Jamison Johnson
42:52
thank you @ms .brown
Tamara Ross
42:58
You also have the option to do "independent study" and take an exam for a course we do not offer at the school.
Kimberlyn Malone
43:55
In your expert opinion are the dual enrollment classes harder than the HS class?
Maria Rosa Carrero
44:01
is thee a document with sample curriculum/courses for a strong AP track and the IB track?
Jamison Johnson
44:05
what do you mean independent study ms ross
Maria Rosa Carrero
44:19
*there*
Tamara Ross
45:10
For example, I have student who plans on taking the AP Computer Science Exam this year. We don't offer this course on campus so he's studying on his own.
Jamison Johnson
45:47
ok thank you @ ms ross
Carla Brown
45:50
Dual enrollment, though they are college classes, are designed by the professor. Some classes are more difficult than others. But it is based on the professor. The AP and IB classes have standardized curriculum.
Jamison Johnson
48:51
yall frozen
William (Bill) Robinson
49:34
Can't hear
William (Bill) Robinson
49:55
Thanks Julia
Dagmar Ebaugh (she/her)
50:33
Lily, did you note that you could fit in a music elective while in IB? Or does that depend on the counselors' scheduling of the orchestra or chorus courses?
Jamison Johnson
51:07
do you go to DHHS lily
Dagmar Ebaugh (she/her)
51:12
THANK YOU :)
Kimberlyn Malone
51:39
Is it common to take all Sr classes in dual enrollment? Would you recommend this? why or why not?
Jenny Norris
52:12
Lily - are you able to enjoy school/life balance as an IB student? Do you have time for outside interests and friends?
Krystal Marie
52:12
what if your child wants to go to a school who offers dual enrollment but not listed on the dhhs site?
Jennifer Green
52:33
I believe the band teacher has sessions for marching band after school.
Dagmar Ebaugh (she/her)
52:35
@jenny - great question!!
Maria Rosa Carrero
52:54
Is IB much more recognized by colleges and universities outside the USA than a strong AP courseload?
Lily Hollatz
53:03
Yes! I am a dancer, and I definitely have time to hang out with my friends outside of it all :)
Susan Stephenson
53:09
Go Abby!
Dagmar Ebaugh (she/her)
53:19
I think that IB is recognized in many other countries as an "international HS diploma"
Jenny Norris
53:24
@Lily - thank you! So good to hear. And thank you for your participation tonight.
Dagmar Ebaugh (she/her)
53:43
vs. AP courses which are US focused. And awesome, Lily, that you were able to also focus on other things outside of IB
jessica howell-edwards
54:06
id like to hear more about the AP vs DE...
John Denine
54:06
IB is definitely recognized worldwide, but most overseas universities require earning the IB diploma first. US universities tend to grand IB credit course-by-course, similar to AP.
Kenya Wharton
54:26
Congratulations, Lily!! 😊
Juli Fleming
54:27
is AP Music Theory offered?
Jamison Johnson
54:42
is IB more of an international course
Carla Brown
54:57
@Juli No, we don't offer AP Music Theory at DHHS
Dagmar Ebaugh (she/her)
55:15
I remember when I was teaching AP, that it was very much "teaching to the test" vs. a well-rounded
Jamison Johnson
56:28
is IB more of an international course
Lily Hollatz
56:29
Of course! Thank you guys! And Jamison it is definitely more of an international course. You will have to take a lot of foreign language classes, and Junior year is American history, but senior year is much more globally focused.
Jamison Johnson
56:52
thank you @lily
Cindy Eldridge
58:22
Are you locked into one track or another by Junior year?
Julia Byrne
59:11
To Cindy: Sort of. You have to be in IB by junior year in order to do the IB Diploma…. but
Julia Byrne
59:39
There are kids who change their minds and go AP
Julia Byrne
01:00:01
But the reverse is not true. You can’t start doing AP junior year and then decide to do IB senior
Anne Bracewell
01:00:04
We have students who come out of IB after junior year--not a lot, but some.
Cindy Eldridge
01:00:21
Ok,...good to know. Thank you !
Dagmar Ebaugh (she/her)
01:00:28
I am really grateful that our HS offers such a rich choice of challenging curriculum options
Jamison Johnson
01:00:46
does GA tech accept me if i took AP
Dagmar Ebaugh (she/her)
01:01:01
And so much gratitude for the parents, staff and students who took the time to share their insights in this meeting!!!
William (Bill) Robinson
01:01:31
Agreed! Thanks for sharing your insights :-)
David Leonard
01:01:43
Yes the speakers have been amazing. Thank you and best of luck in college!
Anne Bracewell
01:02:23
I just added the presentation I give that gives additional overview of IB. And yes, Jamison. Tech takes plenty of AP students.
Jamison Johnson
01:02:30
what time will the zoom meeting end
Odette Schuler
01:02:43
Some basic grading info: AP exams are graded 1-5, 5 being the top mark. IB exams are graded 1-7, 7 being the top mark. So when you hear people talking about colleges accepting a 3 or a 5 or a 6, you have to understand the grading scale of each program.
Andrew Lerch
01:02:46
Do you have a sample schedule for IB? What our kids can expect to take junior and senior year?
Odette Schuler
01:03:21
@Jemison Johnson, we allowed for 1ish hour but if people are interested and able to stay on, we are willing to keep going
Dagmar Ebaugh (she/her)
01:03:25
Great question @Andrew Lerch! Would love to see a sample course load for 11th/12th grade
Lily Hollatz
01:03:34
Ill give you my schedule
William (Bill) Robinson
01:03:36
A sample AP schedule would be nice to see, as well
Julia Byrne
01:04:08
To Andrew: May be different now… but z took Theory of knowledge, 1st year of IB English, IB physics, AP AB Calc (which functioned as the first year of IB Math)
Julia Byrne
01:04:18
First year of IB History as well.
Julia Byrne
01:04:34
Oh! And IB Psych, which was the IB elective choice
Lily Hollatz
01:04:59
yeah mine was basically the same. There's also a foreign language you will take both years.
Julia Byrne
01:05:17
Right, what Lily said. IB French or Spanish
Julia Byrne
01:05:42
(Wait, was Frech IV, IB French was senior year)
jessica howell-edwards
01:05:44
this is helpful. i can see the cost benefit of DE esp combined with AP
jessica howell-edwards
01:05:47
very helpful
Dagmar Ebaugh (she/her)
01:06:16
Thank you, mr. hennery -- great point!
Hunnter Goins
01:06:24
Can DE classes be taken as a rising Junior this summer?
NORA REDDICK
01:07:23
What is the benefit of taking an accelerated class?
Amanda
01:07:32
so what happens to the schedule they put in place a few months ago for the upcoming school. especially if we're thinking of adding AP classes.
Carla Brown
01:07:33
@Hunnter You are limited to the type of classes you can take as a rising Junior. You can only take CTAE classes as a Sophomore
Julia Byrne
01:08:17
To Nora: are you referring to a specific year? Or in general?
Anne Bracewell
01:08:37
Agreed. Mr. Henery. Frankly, I don't think IB would have been a good fit for me. I simply didn't have the focus or drive as a teenager, and I struggled too hard with math and science.
Carla Brown
01:09:10
@Nora Accelerated classes move faster and you cover more material in comparison to general
Hunnter Goins
01:09:22
Thank you.
Jamison Johnson
01:10:24
what about rising senior
NORA REDDICK
01:10:28
Thank you.
Dagmar Ebaugh (she/her)
01:10:34
So students who apply for IB as a rising 9th grader (coming from middle school) have to REAPPLY for IB as a rising junior?
Krystal Marie
01:10:56
what if your student wants to go to a school that’s not on the list but offers dual enrollment
Martha Donovan
01:11:15
@Jamison, rising seniors cannot start IB after 11th grade. It's two full years.
Donyelle Brooks
01:11:20
I have a 9th grade Pre IB student from Druid Hills Middle. What is the suggested class schedule?
Jamison Johnson
01:11:27
what about AP
Martha Donovan
01:11:47
@Dagmar, if a student has completed the application it does not have to be redone.
Dagmar Ebaugh (she/her)
01:12:05
Ms Brooks - I think Ms. Bracewell shared a presentation earlier via the chat that has this schedule in it for 9th graders.
David Leonard
01:12:06
@Martha the reasoning for the School Choice application (for IB) was not entirely clear to me. My son is a freshman and the messaging was that he had to get it in this year. However, you just said he would do it his Sophomore year in prep for his Junior year. So the guidance to a new parent is not clear by any means in the previous communications.
Martha Donovan
01:12:08
@Jamison, AP should be available!
David Leonard
01:12:25
And @Martha thank you for your comments. :)
Dagmar Ebaugh (she/her)
01:12:52
Thank you, @Martha
Jamison Johnson
01:13:00
thank you @martha
William (Bill) Robinson
01:13:02
Is there an AP application deadline?
Tamara Ross
01:13:24
@William - there's no application for AP.
Lily Hollatz
01:13:34
I don't think you apply for AP as it is not an official program
William (Bill) Robinson
01:13:42
thanks!
Dagmar Ebaugh (she/her)
01:13:59
So... now it makes sense. kids planning for IB, they take those graduation requirements BEFORE launching into the IB program jr / sr year
R. A. Henery
01:14:06
You may take your first AP course as early as 9th grade
Martha Donovan
01:14:07
@David, the recommendation is most definitely to get it in by 9th grade if it's of a high interest. However, there is room to decide as a rising 10th grader as well. Ms. Brown is speaking about course scheduling issues that can arise, so it is best to get it going if the child is interested.
R. A. Henery
01:14:12
AP Human Geography
Lily Hollatz
01:14:20
Yes @Dagmar
Anne Bracewell
01:14:23
Mr. Leonard-the reason that you do want the application done is so that you are essentially "saving" a seat if you're qualified and accepted and keep up the GPA and class requirements. There's a chance that there may not be seats available if a student applies during grade 10.
David Leonard
01:14:26
@Martha yes thank you!
Charlie McAdoo II
01:14:41
What were the three classes that Ms. Brown stated?
Dagmar Ebaugh (she/her)
01:14:56
Does DHHS cover the cost of AP testing for students enrolled in the AP courses?
Jamison Johnson
01:15:02
where will the AP classes be listed lol?
Lily Hollatz
01:15:07
Macro Economics, AP World, and I think AP Human Geography
Dagmar Ebaugh (she/her)
01:15:09
Thank you, @Ms Bracewell
Ayan Gedi
01:15:20

Carla Brown
01:16:03
@Jamison 3rd level of the world language, economics, advanced algebra (algebra II)
Tamara Ross
01:16:16
@Dagmar - The district will pay for one exam per student.
R. A. Henery
01:16:19
Most AP and IB courses have a summer assignment.

01:17:23
How do we know what IB assignments we have to complete over the summer & also what year do IB summer assignments start ?
holiviero
01:17:32
very good about calling the college admissions office and asking about credit, and help deciding which classes to maybe take.
holiviero
01:17:41
Assignments are listed on school website.
Julia Byrne
01:17:45
Teachers release the summer assignment list, usually by mid June.
Dagmar Ebaugh (she/her)
01:17:46
Thanks @Valerie -- Nice to "see" you again. :)

Anne Bracewell
01:22:00
Ayan, I know that some are. I'll see what I can find out.
Jamison Johnson
01:23:45
what is the expected grade for AP classes
Ayan Gedi
01:23:55
Thank you!
Valarie Basheda
01:24:26
They get a class grade and then they can take the AP test. What score they get on the AP test depends on whether they get college credit.
Anne Bracewell
01:24:46
Zeya, if you start IB next tear, you will get summer assignments before school is out.
Valarie Basheda
01:24:50
The class grade goes toward their GPA.
Lily Hollatz
01:25:42
I had Ms. Ward for my AP Calc class and she was a really great teacher!

Julia Byrne
01:28:36
I have an AP question re: threading. Are all the AP classes threaded now so that they last a year? Or are there still some that are fall semester only?
Tamara Ross
01:28:43
@Kristina yes
Anne Bracewell
01:28:55
Advanced algebra is a state graduation requirement.
Tamara Ross

01:29:40
Ms. Ross…. Can you tell me which ones are one semester? Well, really one semester, fall only is the issue

how many AP courses are required for graduation
Julia Byrne
01:29:54
Yay, spring :-) thx
Anne Bracewell
01:30:04
Ms. Byrne, I think AP stat is often one semester? I'd have to double check. And the IB diplomas are in my office--I hope to be back on Tuesday. You can call me to come and get his.
Anne Bracewell
01:30:34
Jamison, you are not required to take any AP classes to graduate.
Tamara Ross
01:30:38
One semester - Stats, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science, & Psychology (these have yearlong options)
Julia Byrne
